Sales Engineer

The Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (The Center) is an independent organization that specializes in providing technical services, training, and consulting.  Our mission is to assist manufacturers by increasing their productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Position Summary

The Center is expanding its offerings in Product Design, with a particular emphasis on lightweighting via material selection, design optimization and manufacturability. Key to this expansion is our close relationship with LIFT – Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow in Detroit, with technical direction provided by our Principal Materials Engineer.

The Sales Engineer position is responsible for actively driving and managing the sales process, working in conjunction with the Principal Engineer as the key technical advisor and product advocate for a wide range of lightweight engineering service offerings. This person in this position must be able to articulate technology and engineering services and create market positioning both internally and to our industry partners. The job incumbent must be able to identify all technical issues to assure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of projects. In addition, the right candidate must be able to establish and maintain strong relationships throughout the sales cycle.  Candidates with particularly strong technical backgrounds might be involved in direct service delivery to clients as well as business development, particularly in the application of lightweight materials usage, whether in automotive, aerospace or other industries.

Specific duties:

  1. Prepare and deliver technical presentations explaining lightweight engineering services to customers and prospective customers
  2. Confer with customers and engineers to assess engineering and technological needs and to determine requirements
  3. Collaborate with The Center and LIFT staff to understand market and LIFT member requirements and provide support
  4. Help clients solve problems with engineering/technology issues
  5. Recommend improved materials or machinery to customers, showing how changes will lower costs or increase production
  6. Help in researching and developing new offerings
  7. Develop and manage a book of business involving Lightweighting and Design projects, delivered under the direction of the Principal Engineer


  • Bachelor of Sciences degree is required with a discipline of Mechanical and/or Materials Engineering
  • Ability to use technical skills to explain the benefits of our services to potential customers and to show how our expertise and services solve customer requirements and needs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly establish rapport with customers and partner members to create credibility.
  • Strong written and communications skills and the ability to present information to a technical audience.

Desired Attributes:

  • Formula SAE college experience
  • Experience in designing lightweight structures
  • Fabrication and joining experience
  • A fundamental understanding of metals and metallurgy
  • Experience/knowledge in joining (welding, brazing, riveting, structural adhesives, LFW, etc.
