Analysis and Prioritization of Opportunities for Lightweight Design Approaches for the Oil and Gas Sector

 The Center has a close working relationship with LIFT – Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow, a Manufacturing USA Institute devoted to lightweight metals technologies, located in Detroit. Thanks to funding from our primary federal sponsor, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, The Center has retained a Principal Materials Engineer who works out of the LIFT location on Rosa Parks Boulevard.

The Center seeks a contractor to help with identifying and evaluating potential pilot projects relevant to the needs of the Oil and Gas industry.  Specifically, we seek a list of four to eight project ideas involving new design optimization and material selection methods, that will deliver substantial weight-reduction benefits for oil and gas applications. Those applications might involve exploration, drilling, extraction or transportation. For each suggested project, the contractor will describe key aspects of the resulting work, including:

  1. A statement of the motivating technical issue or need;
  2. A summary of the proposed design solution, and how that solution would incorporate lightweight metals, carbon-fiber composites, advanced modeling, and/or multi-material joining;
  3. A mapping of required capabilities for carrying out the project relative to the capabilities of LIFT and its sister organization, the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI);
  4. An assessment of likely interest within the industry in investing in the project, and a list of potential commercial investment partners; and
  5. A preliminary project time and cost budget.

The successful applicant will have extensive experience within the Oil and Gas industry, and ability to make useful suggestions drawn largely from his or her personal knowledge base. I.e., the Center is seeking expert advice rather than a process of eliciting project ideas via broad-based research.

Please apply on-line and include a statement of personal qualifications.
